Ceramic Head
In a ceramics class project, students were tasked with creating a bust. Rather than designing a purely decorative piece, this bust was intended to serve a functional purpose. A hole was added to the top, transforming the sculpture into a planter.
The process began by rolling out a slab of clay and forming it into a cylinder, intentionally leaving both the top and bottom open. The head and neck were shaped next, with slots carefully poked out for the eyes. Additional features such as the hair, nose, ears, mouth, and decorative flowers were built up with added clay.
Because the piece was meant to function as a planter, a ceramic crown was created to complement the idea of holding real flowers. However, during the construction process, a base was accidentally left out. To adapt, the piece was reimagined as a vase, ideal for holding dried flowers instead. This creative pivot not only solved the issue but added to the character and versatility of the final piece.
