Typography Poster
I chose to design my poster around the Anchorage Fur Rondy festival. Since the event takes place in winter, I went with a cool, winter-inspired color palette and added texture by creating a frosty background. Since the event's name is the most important element on the poster, I wanted to highlight that it’s the 90th celebration. To keep "90th" from overpowering "Fur Rondy," I muted its color and placed "Fur Rondy" in front, making it the focal point. Placed at the very top above Fur Rondy and 90th, I included a few events to give viewers a taste of the event by providing the date and location. At the bottom, I added a brief explanation of the festival’s history. I kept this text small because it's background information, and doing so also helped introduce variation in the layout.
The purpose of the exercise was to explore the grid system and challenges that accompany only using text, color, and texture. I justified the paragraphs to stay aligned with the grid and cleaned up any typographic issues like rivers and orphans by adjusting tracking and kerning. I also tweaked the leading to create a more airy, readable layout. Throughout this process, I learned how to apply texture and formatting type. The event section is also tricky. I went through several ideations before landing on a layout that worked. Despite the challenges, I am happy with how it all came together in the end.
