Magazine
This magazine spread was designed based on an article about running shoes, with hierarchy serving as the foundation of the layout. A bold, oversized title occupies nearly half the page, immediately drawing attention. Subtitles are highlighted through the use of a different color and a slightly larger font size than the body text. Content is organized so that related topics are grouped in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence for the reader. To balance the visual weight of the text-heavy right side, the title was scaled large enough to counterbalance the composition. An image of a shoe acts as a visual bridge, guiding the viewer’s eye from one text section to another. The left shoelace draws attention vertically, while the right shoelace leads the viewer’s gaze horizontally.
The goal of the assignment was to design a magazine spread using a text-based article, applying principles of hierarchy, scale, and grid space to create an engaging and visually appealing layout. One key takeaway from the project was learning how to wrap text around other text elements. The design process included experimentation with both Procreate and InDesign. While combining the two programs was an exciting creative opportunity, it also introduced challenges. Making changes in one program often required resending files to the other, leading to a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating back-and-forth—especially when dealing with small adjustments. Despite these challenges, the creative process was rewarding. The final draft showed significant improvement over the initial version, demonstrating growth and learning throughout the project.
